SYS Thursday and some help with Word Verification
1/27/10
Before we get started with the link party I have to thank all of you for joining me! Each week just gets better and better and I hope you all are receiving some visitors with nice comments to your site.
In speaking of comments, I really need to put this out there- it is a growing pet peeve of mine- Word Verification. I am not typing this to offend anyone who might have it on their blog, so please don't feel like I am on a soapbox here- my intention in writing this is to let all of you know how to take it off and what you can do to avoid the spam comments rather than having a Word Verification for every person who leaves a comment.
Let me start out by saying I never use to get spam comments on my personal blog because it is a private blog and no spammers could get to it. I never understood why anybody would want Word Verification on their blog because I couldn't see what the benefit was. Then I started this blog and shortly after launching I was getting 3-4 spam comments a day! SO IRRITATING! I started to realize the possible good in the WV, but still hesitated putting it on my site because I hated it so much. Then I discovered a little tip! Follow me...
-Go to your blogger dashboard and click on your SETTINGS tab.
-From there, click on the COMMENTS tab.
-The 2nd question down says, "Who can comment?"- check the REGISTERED USERS- INCLUDES OPEN ID circle.
-Save your settings.
By doing this, when your readers come to your site, they might have to check a box with their ID before they leave a comment, but that is way better than trying to decifer an often hard group of letters in a Word Verificatoin, am I right?
There are so many times I sit there and wonder "is that an ol or a d?" I sometimes have to resubmit the dang thing several times just to get it right! My comment will be something short like, "I love this idea" and the word verification is "exasperationismistic." (what the?!) The only time I ever get a good laugh is when at first site the word looks like a bad word, or like google is sending subliminal messages to its readers:
I love visiting each and every link for SYS, but it is starting to take up too much time leaving comments for everyone. So how do I show my appreciation (because I really do want you here!) without spending too much time leaving comments?! By begging all my readers to take of the WV- pleeaasssee!!!
Some of you might have the WV on your blog and you don't realize it or don't know how to get it off. When you create a blog it automatically defaults to having the WF appear. Follow me again...
Go to your blogger dashboard and click on your SETTINGS tab.
-From there, click on the COMMENTS tab.
-Scroll almost to the bottom of the page where you see Click "No"
-Save your settings.
Its that easy- only takes a minute! Ever since I did the above steps in October, I have only received 1 spam comment! Its so nice!
Who is with me on boycotting the WV? We can start an online protest til everyone takes it off their blog, lol!
Ok, enough of that, ON TO THE PARTY ALREADY!!!
If you’re new here, every Thursday we get together to share our newest creations. It could be just about anything- A makeover, a project, artwork, a great recipe... I am not picky, just show me whatcha got!
Just a couple of rules to make sure we are all playing fair:
1. Link to your specific post, not the main page of your blog.
2. Include a short description of your creation and the name of your blog.
3. Grab our party button or link to this party from your site so everyone can get in on the fun.
4. Please no links to etsy shops or online stores.
5. If your link is deleted, don't stress, just re-read these rules and join in again!
6. If you linked your project and didn't receive a comment from me- take off the word verrification on your blog and then add your link again. (I am boycotting all WV, remember!)

Each weekend I will also choose a few of my favorite creations to highlight from the links submitted, so check back and see if the special spotlight is on you! Lets get started, shall we?

I have taken WV off my blog awhile ago. I do moderate older comments and for some reason the spam comments always tun up on my older posts. So it's very easy for me to remove them and I'm the only one who ever sees them. I am like you I hate WV. It's especially fusterating during a linky party when I am looking at 100 posts and many of them have the WV on there. It takes soooo long to leave a comment!
AMEN! Holy cow, I HATE WV! I don't hate a lot of things, but when I am trying to leave a quick comment and it has word verification, if I have tried more than once and it doesn't work I just exit and don't leave a comment!
Once, I was buying something, and had to do it, I swear it was all in Chinese- I tried it 15 times, I even listened to the code and couldn't get it right. IT literally took me ten minutes and my baby was crying the whole time! URGH!
Thanks for the party!
I hate the word verification. It takes a long time to write comments. Mine have always been off! I'm joining your party this week. I also have a party on Thursday's and would love for you to join in mine.
Thanks so much for your post! I sometimes say forget the comments because I can't get the darn word right..{thought I was the only one that possibly had a problem reading them =)} I love visiting the links and love to leave comments but hate wv.
Thanks for hosting!!
I always hated WV as well. Now I have it because of the spam. I keep hitting enter until I find one that is easy and even then I often end up doing 2. If I switch to registered users will it allow anonymous comments? I have some old-fashioned commenters that don't have logins.
I am so with you!!! Thanks for the fist tip on how to not get the spam with the WV gone though. Definatly doing that on both my blogs!
Thanks for the tip on word verification! I didn't realize there was a better way. :)
I am laughing so hard! A friend of mine (www.tawnajacobs.net) pointed me to this post of yours. You might enjoy this post of mine about the same thing: http://marineswife.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/blogging-comment-resolution/
AMAN sister about the WV! I am dyslexic and I often have to do it 5 or 6 times because the letters mix around in my head (having them all curvy makes it so MUCH worse)! Very ANNOYING! The worst is when they have WV AND comment approval too... ummmm, you do not need both! : )
I am probabaly going to do a simalar post on this same subject!
so does open users work for those who don't have a blog- can they still leave a comment?
Oh my gosh. THANK YOU. I don't mind word verification, but I know it drives a lot of people crazy. And so I felt bad having it on my site. But I HATE spam comments. It seemed like a no-win situation.
So thank you thank you thank you for posting this!!
Thanks for all the info. I don't know if I even have it or not. I mean, I've never left a comment on my own blog. I'm going to check it now and fix everything the way you said. Thanks for hosting the party again.
I took WV off ages ago. I tend to get a lot of spam comments on several older posts that I linked to various blog parties, for some reason. I went in to edit each individual post and made it so that I could still see the existing comments, but no one new could comment on those posts. They're so old anyways, I figured someone would probably rather comment on something recent. :) I delete spam on current posts immediately (Blogger emails me a copy of each comment). :)
I hate WV too, but I always have to "say it outloud" and laugh if it's vulgar lol.
I love your word verification screens in this post-too funny! I don't like WV either-especially when you leave the comment and think they don't have it and then it pops up in a smaller screen. Thanks for the link up!
I'm going to turn my WV off. I didn't want to get spam comments, but I still get them...even with WV, so I'd rather not annoy the people that actually want to comment.
My pet peeve is when the comment section is on the same screen as the blog post. For some reason my computer has a really hard time letting me comment. I love it when bloggers (like you) have a pop up screen. Makes it so much easier!
Thanks for your rant! I enjoyed it and completely agree!
I should figure out the pop up screen though, I think that is a nice touch.
Anyway, as ironic as it was, no sooner had I finished reading your post then I got a rather, interesting WV myself. If I had pronounced it phonetically, it would have been rather obscene! Oh Google, who is in charge of running that "feature?!?"
thanks for your great blog! I enjoy coming here!
First time visitor here - oh your site is awsome! Can't wait to read more :)
I'll change my WV soon, I think my computer time is up for today. Thanks for being such a nice host. feel free to skip me anytime.
Kalleen
I am totally with you on word verification...so annoying! Yesterday I was reading this post and was surprised that you ever got spam comments. I never got them so I never would have thought that people get them. This morning I got on my blog and what to ya know...a spam comment, my first one ever. I thought the timing couldn't be funnier, but still equally annoying. I will be following your steps above right now, thanks for the tip. (This one does look like a registered user though, I can't tell, so it might not have caught this one)
yep, I was right. I went to change my settings and it was already set to only registered users. This must be my one that slipped through. Thanks, still, nonetheless!
I am SOOOO glad you said that! I took mine off awhile ago because I know it drives me nuts to have to go do it at other blogs. It also makes leaving comments take that much longer. So thanks for posting this. :)
