Tutorial Tuesday- Child Incentive Chart
2/9/10
For those of you who missed my blog swap with Posh Pieces, here is what I made!
As a mom of 3 little kiddos, I am always trying to think of creative ways (that actually work) when it comes to discipline for my kids as well as ways to reward them for good behavior. Here is an idea I thought up that does both:
As a mom of 3 little kiddos, I am always trying to think of creative ways (that actually work) when it comes to discipline for my kids as well as ways to reward them for good behavior. Here is an idea I thought up that does both:
(Nothing too fancy- just a wood plaque with buttons on a ribbon and a clothes pin hanging on the button)
... and here is how it works!
At the beginning of each week, my kids will get their clothes pins set back to the middle button on their charts. When they whine, fight, throw fits, etc, I lower their pin to the next lowest button and keep lowering it for each "naughty thing" they do. Same thing goes for opposite behavior- when they help me out, play nicely, and don't whine at bedtime, their clothes pin moves up.
Each Friday, those kids with buttons on the very top button get to stay up a half hour later; those with their clothes pins on the lowest button go to bed a half hour before their bedtime! Any pins in the middle just go to bed at the regular time.
You can make this too and modify it to fit your kid's "currency." Will they behave if they knew a treat was coming, a fun outing, a new toy, money? My kids currency is a later bedtime, so that it what we use!
You can obviously adapt this idea into any sort of chart you would like, but if you want to know how I made this one, here is an easy tutorial:
I bought these at walmart for $2 each (or around there)
I lightly painted the wood white- 1 coat is all I wanted for the look I was trying to achieve. Then I sanded the edges to have the wood peek through again.
I mixed a brown and yellow paint with a little bit of water to paint the edges and make them look distressed a bit.
I just brished the brown paint along the edges of the wood and then wiped it off after 30 seconds with a paper towel
When that was dry, I stapled a ribbon to the center of each board, hanging 1 inch off the top and 6 inches on the bottom. (I like to cover my staples with some hot glue so they don't scratch my walls, but that is just me!)
Then I added some vinyl initials to the front of the board and 7 fun buttons to each ribbon.
You'll need some clothes pins, and if you want to make them cuter, all you do is put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the front of the clip,
place your paper (cut to size) on top of the layer of Mod Podge,
paint one more coat on top of the paper to seal it,
and then let it dry completely!
When everything is dry, hang it on your wall! I just used a push pin in the center of the ribbon on the top of the board.
And you are DONE!

What a great idea! We use a printable chart but I like this better! Thanks for sharing!
What a creative and stylish way to discipline your kids!! You are a genius!!! :)
What a great idea!!!
What a great idea!!! I wish my two year old would understand it, but I dont know if she would yet! But when she is a bit bigger I will def. make one of these!!!
I LOVE this idea. I am going to make them today
I made one too.... my son loves it and it is so simple. The added bonus is that his teacher uses a similar incentive chart, so it carries over from school to home.
Have a great week!
Thanks for sharing! This is a great idea!
I love this! I wanted an incentive chart but wasn't crazy at the store selections- this is simple, able to adapt as the age and need changes and I can make!!! Thanks!
Oh, this is great! Check out my blog at www.theimperfectmom.blogspot.com for more ideas. I use a 'token' system and it works sooooo well for us
