Master Bedroom Collage & Monogram

2009
close
info:
For those of you who liked My Master Bedroom Re-Do, here are the 2 tutorials I put together for the new picture arrangement above my bed.
(Big frame is 24x24 & other frames are 12x12)**********Couple Collage(Inspired by my SIL, Megan)

I have hardly any pictures hanging on the wall of me and my husband together- all our frames are occupied with pictures of the kiddos (they are much cuter than we are!) but this project displays the awesome places we have been, the fun stuff we have done, and the great memories we have made together! Here is what I did:
I bought this frame at a thrift shop for a couple bucks:
I took it apart, painted it black, then sanded the edges:
Then I gathered pictures- lots and lots of pictures (72 to be exact!)
I uploaded them to Picnik.com and had fun making them all black & white then making a collage.
Picnik has premade templates for collages- I used 3 different templates that hold 8 photos each.
I made 9 total collages and sized them to be 8.25 inches square, which happened to fit my square frame PERFECTLY! No cutting or overlapping needed!.
Then I just printed them out on my computer! Here are the finished collages:
Next I laid (or is it layed?) the collages out and taped them together on the backsides like so:
Lastly, I put them in my frame and showed my husband, of course. He was proud of me!

Framed Vinyl InitialIf you like an easy "no-brainer", this is for you!
(K, I am just now proof-reading that tutorial and I am so embarrassed about those spelling errors! Not embarrassed enough to fix it, but embarrassed enough to admit I do know how to spell "perimeter", and "ack" was supposed to be "back". Sorry ladies!)

Magnetic Chore Chart

2009
close
info:

This is how I get my kids to work around the house! Magnetic Chore Charts are the best! We have been using these chore charts for over a year now and my kids still enjoy using their magnets to show me what they have done!
To make these, all I did was:
1. Buy a piece of 8x11 sheet metal @ Home Depot (approx. $2) and cut it down to fit and 8x10 frame.
2. Cut vinyl stickers to label 8 chores my kids do daily. (You could use a sharpie marker and write the chores if you don't have access to a vinyl machine.)
3. Get some magnets for each child that fit in the squares to show which chores they have completed.
And that is it!

Let's Celebrate!

2009
close
info:

This Celebration Board has been a lot of fun in our home.

Its our family's place to write any reason at all to celebrate for the day.

It just makes me smile looking at some of the reasons my kids come up with!

This was MY reason to celebrate- our whole family seen by the dentist and not a single cavity in anybody's teeth!

Here's how to make your own:

I used the front of a drawer from the As-Is section at Ikea that I bought for $1.99

If you want your entire board to be a chalkboard, you can skip this step.
Follow the directions on the chalkboard paint can- each brand is different.
Let it dry completely, then take off the tape and you should have a nice, clean border.
Make sure you leave enough room under your holes for your vinyl stickers
If you don't have vinyl stickers, you can freehand it with markers or puffy paint.
I like to change out my ribbon to match the season or holiday.
Some of our reasons to celebrate have been:
-Ethan lost his tooth!
- Everyone did their chores!
- We're going to the Hockey Game for FHE!
- It's Friday!
- Uncle Ron is now a missionary!
... just to name a few!
Seriously, my kids try to come up with something new EVERY DAY!
So make your own "Celebration Board" and you'll always find some reason to be happy, no matter how silly the reason is!

Dry-Erase Glass Calendar

2009
close
info:

This is one of the most popular projects I've ever shared on Somewhat Simple!

MATERIALS: All you need is a glass frame, a sharpie marker, a ruler and vinyl stickers if you have them. (If you dont have them, just write the labels yourself with the marker, or email me- I will get you some!)Here is the frame I chose:

(My sister actually got it years ago at IKEA in the as-is section for $1.99- I don't know what it was supposed to be for, but it sure fits perfect for this calendar of mine!)
DIRECTIONS: First, I painted the frame red and then distressed it by sanding the edges.
Then I flipped the frame over to the backside, got my free ruler from the grocery store and my trusty Sharpie marker and went to work drawing lines!
I was worried about this part, wondering if one slip of my hand would make a line not straight and ruin the entire glass, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the marker comes off with a little Windex and paper towel. I changed my mind on the spacing of each area and had to erase that "permanent marker" several times!!! PLEASE NOTE: It is important to draw the lines on the back of the glass so you don't have to worry about the lines coming off the more you use this calendar. After the lines were drawn, I applied my vinyl stickers, also to the backside of the glass. (If you are cutting your vinyl, you will need to cut it backwards so it looks right from the front.)
Lastly, I added some hardware to the back so it will hang on the wall, like so:
When all of that is done, your calendar is finished! Simply use a dry erase marker to write and rewrite your family's happenings!
One cute variation I saw was done on a 12x12 frame so you can change the background of you calendar with scrapbook paper to match the seasons of the year! This idea is a lot of fun, so make one and get creative with it!Here are some more pictures of one I made using a $5 Ikea frame.

The frame was the perfect size, but watch out, the permanent marker is not as easy to rub off of the plexiglass!

Fabric Flower Headbands

2010
close
info:
This is officially my favorite thing to make right now because its super easy and very cute!!!
I found quite a few tutorials online, each of them similar but different. Here is my perfected, yet simplified version:
Materials Needed:
Scissors, needle & thread, glue gun, button, headband, 1 piece of rectanglular fabric (approx. 1/2 inch by 1 inch) and 6 fabric circles- 2 large and 4 smaller.
*You can use any size circles you want, just make sure you have 2 of the same size for the larger circles and 4 of the same size that are smaller than the large ones. You can use all the same fabric, but for this I am using denim for the large circles and a cute print for the smaller ones.Ok, here is a video I made to show you how to assemble your flower- its easy easy easy!
(For those of you who know me in real life, please tell me my voice isn't that annoying!!!)
Once you stitch your petals and your button in the center, you get to decide what to do with this pretty little flower. I decided to make some headbands. Here is one more video of me showing you the easiest way I found to attach your flower to a plastic headband. You can find headbands super cheap at WalMart (4 for $1) and also the dollar store. No need to spend a ton!
And that's it! So easy and super cute!
(doesn't really match my 3 year old's purple Jonas Brothers PJs, but thats ok!)
Here are some more that I made:
Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!

White Elephant Gift

2010
close
info:

One of the most popular projects featured on Somewhat Simple, this White Elephant Gift is not for the faint of heart! Please only keep reading if you have a sense of humor and promise me you won't leave any negative comments. If you don't like it, walk away! :)

At our Valentine's Party, we asked each couple to bring a white elephant gift. This glass block "decor" was the present Rob and I brought. It was meant to be a total joke, but ended up being the hot item of the night! So hot, in fact, I have made some more since the party for friends who were there and wanted one for their own home!
I hesitated posting about this (you never know who is going to be offended or what "idea" of yours will end up getting trashed on some random message board!) but then I thought, "What the heck!" We had a good laugh, and hopefully (most of you) will too!

And I have to give my Brother in-law, Jason, total credit for this quote! He is the clever one in the family!

WHAT YOU NEED:

Vinyl letters

A glass block ($5 or so at Home Depot in the window section)

Ribbon.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

1. Clean the glass block with some rubbing alcohol or window cleaner and let it dry.

2. Apply your vinyl letters

3. Tie up with a bow!

VARIATION:

Since many of you have emailed me asking for a set of your own vinyl stickers, and since I no longer offer this vinyl, I created a printable PDF that is available for purchase in my etsy shop. Just purchase, print & frame this and in less than 5 minutes you're done!

Baby Boy Shower Gift

2010
close
info:
After having 4 girls, my sweet friend is making the final preparations to welcome her first little boy into their family and I couldn't be more excited for her! For her shower last weekend, I gave her a cute gift (at least I thought it was cute anyway!) Here is what I did:
I bought some cute boy onesies, rolled them up and layed them in a baseball glove... because every little boy needs a baseball glove, right?
I put the glove inside a plastic container (from the dollar store) and filled it with other baby items- a baseball, a couple receiving blankets, some baby wash etc. Then I tied it up with a bow and voila! Easy and cute!
*I also included a framed quote that will be featured in another post on somewhat simple for Father's Day- so come back to see that fun project- its super sweet and would be a great gift for a dad!
You don't have to spend a lot of money on a cute gift- just get creative in the wrapping of it- its all about presentation, right?

Dry Erase Activity Book

2010
close
info:
This is a fun idea for kids of all ages and is a perfect companion for church or even a long car ride.
Simply take a photo album, print some fun activities off your computer, slide them inside the album and let your kid go to town with a dry erase marker!
I just made my own coloring sheets, I found some I Spy pages online and I also made some game pages for Tic Tac Toe, HangMan and other fun games. I printed them off and mounted them onto scrapbook paper for some extra color.
Leah has already been playing with this for hours and the only problem I have is that I now need 2 more!
Color with the markers...
... then erase with a tissue.
If you'd like to use the same images I used inside my book, here are the JPEG pictures- click on them to enlarge, then save and print to whatever size you need.
Have fun!

Pacifier Candies

2011
close
info:
These little goodies make a cute addition to a baby shower, and they couldn't be easier to make!
All you need is York Peppermint Patties, Life Savers Candies, Candied Almonds and a new or very clean glue gun.
*I bought the minty Life Savers, but next time I will make it more colorful and yummier and use the fruit flavored ones.
*Candied Almonds come in a huge variety of colors so you can easily match the decor of the shower you are making them for
First off, heat up that glue gun! Then...
1. Melt a small area of the top of one Peppermint Patty simply by touching your glue gun to the center. Quickly place an almond on top of the melted chocolate and hold in place for a few seconds or until the chocolate hardens a bit.
2. Repeat the same process for the underside of the patty but stick a life saver to the melted chocolate instead of the candied almond.
3. Set it aside and let the chocolate complete dry and harden.
You could use them around the food table for added decor, set them on a tray for a little treat, or place them on top of a cupcake!
How fun is that?!?

Father's Day Remote Control Cookies

2011
close
info:

It's time to start thinking about what to get dear old Dad!

Father's Day is June 19th and that's reason enough for me to make some cookies!

There's no going wrong with a tie for your Dad.

Actually there is...  your picky Dad/husband might take it back for a different design.

I'll correct myself, there's no going wrong with an edible tie!

Just make up a few colors of royal icing and arm yourself with squeezie bottles and toothpicks.

With a tie cookie cutter, and a few simple cookie basics, you are on your way to making some stylish ties.

My kids helped me with these, and they're going to the freezer now.  I have frozen dough and cookies before, but it wasn't until recently that I tried freezing frosted sugar cookies.  And guess what?  It works! So these things are going to resurface on June 19th!

But I felt like I wanted to try something a little more "out of the box."  So I racked my brain for some other man-cookie ideas.  It's not easy.  But I decided on making a remote, then put it in a box.

Ideally this would accompany the gift of your husband's dream TV.  But if you're me, you wouldn't dream of picking out a TV on your own.  But I think this would be great wrapped up with a DVD, or simply a promise that you give your man some alone time with sports center.

How do you make a remote cookie, you ask?  You don't have that cookie cutter?

I just put my actual remote in my copier/printer.

Then I cut it out, put it on my cookie dough and cut it out with a small knife.

You can use this method to make just about any shape of cookie you can imagine.

1. Outline  2. Fill  3. Let dry  4. Make your buttons by looking over at your remote.

Mine ended up a little off center, but that's okay!

To decorate the buttons, I used these edible markers with a fine tip.  These things are just beyond fun.

They write on (dried) royal icing, really well!  You may just want to color all over your cookies!

I added some candy on the bottom because the box I found was a little deeper than I wanted.

My Dad came over and saw this and said it was "unreal."  He was impressed with my craziness!

I thought it was so real, I might just make one for April Fool's Day and replace it with the real one.

Or, if you've lost the remote and you're hubs is real mad, just hand him this and I'm sure he'll simmer down just fine.  Hehehaha!

Oh the possibilities!  Silly possibilities.

I hope you are inspired to make some custom cookies of your own.  Don't be afraid to use copy machines, knives and markers.  We do what it takes here in the cookie world!
