Breast Cancer runs in my family, so you can probably imagine the fear that set in when my mom had to have a lump removed that they found in her mammogram about 5 years ago. It was a scary time, it seemed like our family had already been through so much and another diagnosis just didn’t seem fair. I remember trying to act positive around my mom, reassuring her that it was probably nothing… but in my mind the waiting game was freaking me out!
Fortunately for all of us, early detection definitely paid off. My mom and I are meeting for lunch today, in fact, and I am so lucky to have her around!
Now that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, we all know someone who has fought a good fight and we all have our stories to tell. I am so grateful my story has a happy ending, and I am grateful for the knowledge about monthly self-exams and how important they can be in saving our lives.
There are a lot of great tips and advice on Self Breast Examiniations, the best times to perform one (several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender) and how to get to know yourself so you can more easily detect something abnormal. I am kind of a planner- I use 1 online calendar for everything and I get reminders sent to me on my phone from this calendar. One of those reminders comes on the 15th of every month and I’ve recently updated the words to say, “Check your Headlights!”
