Child’s Sensory Book- Scribble Shop Challenge

Recently I was selected  to be in a group of bloggers who were issued a challenge to receive a box of {random} craft supplies from Scribble Shop and make something with all of the products.

Take a look at what came in the mail:

Supplies: glitter brads, Martha Stewart glitter, chalkboard paint, feathers, blue and green charm pack, wool roving.

When I received my supplies, I was totally stumped.

How was I supposed to use all of those items in one project?

The box of supplies sat in the corner for 2 weeks and I had no clue what to do with any of it!

I pulled it all out (for the 3rd time) and thought to myself, “Mason would love to get his hands on this stuff!” (Mason is my 8 month old who is into EVERYTHING now-a-days!)

And then it hit me.

I couldn’t let Mason play with these items, unless I made them into something kid-friendly.

Enter “Mason’s Sensory Book!”

Here is how I made it, using ALL of the included supplies!

1. I had this set of 6 coasters from the dollar store and I painted one side of them with the black chalkboard paint. (One side was cork, the other was the star pattern. I wasn’t a fan of the star pattern.)

2. I used the Martha Stewart Glitter & Glue to write various sensory words on the black side of the coasters. *Note: Because this was a challenge, I needed to use the glitter, but it’s probably better to use a marker of some sort for your own book so your baby won’t end up all sparkly!

3. For the cover, I made Mason’s hand print with some green craft paint I had on hand. This was a near disaster and it took 3 or 4 times and the help of my husband and 8 year old to get something that sort of resembled Mason’s chubby hand.

4. I laid out all the items from my box next to their sensory word and hot glued them to the cork side of the coaster. Since I had 6 coasters, I also used a couple things I had around the home- sand paper and a piece of smooth plastic.

5. I took my Crop-A-Dile and punched a hole into the corners of each coaster.

6. I cut a strip from the charm pack and slipped in through the holes in the corner. The I tied it up to secure it and make a book.

Here is a look at each page:

Cover: Chalkboard Paint & Green Craft Paint

Page 1: “Soft” – Craft feathers

Page 2: “Smooth” Cut piece of plastic sandwich bag

Page 3: “Hard” Glittered Brads

Page 4: “Furry”  Wool Roving

Page 5:  “Rough” sandpaper

And it probably goes without saying, but Mason loved it!

All my kids loved it, actually.

And I can’t (or won’t) leave him unattended with this book, but in reality, I can’t leave him unattended with anything lately!

My kids and I also made these:

This idea came from a conversation I was having with Amy from The Idea Room- we were talking about how our kids LOVED those packing peanuts that the supplies came in and how we should think of an idea that uses those packing peanuts. These little critters are made just by stinking feathers inside the peanut and drawing a face with a sharpie marker. I also discovered if you stick a glitter brad to the bottom, these “animals” will stand up on their own. Have fun!

So here’s a question:

WHAT WOULD YOU CREATE WITH THESE SUPPLIES?

Thanks to Scribble Shop for sponsoring this challenge.

Disclosure: In addition to receiving these products at no charge, I was also compensated for my time in creating these projects.

  9. Hi Stephanie

Thank you for participating in the Scribble Shop Challenge.

This is such an amazing idea, I really like how you used the materials for a Sensory Book, I would have never thought to do so. I also really enjoy how you’re children made a craft out of the package peanuts, very cute!

We are posting the finalist on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ScribbleShop tomorrow, March 30th, 2012.

    Stay Tunned!
