A few months ago, my sister asked me to make her a Tiled Menu Board for her mother in law as a birthday present. These are way easy to make, but the problem I have run into with this project is finding the right tile- you want something shiny without a lot of grooves in it so that the dry erase marker wipes off easily. Now a days shiny tile is not so much in style, as people are using the more natural stone-looking tiles, so neither Home Depot or Lowes has much of a selection. For my sister’s mother in law, my search for the perfect tile came up empty, but I made her a cute menu board anyway that I think I may even like better!
I just bought a 10×13 frame (which I think is the perfect size!), put some scrapbook paper and some vinyl lettering behind the glass and put it on a simple iron easel. I added a dry erase marker and some velcro to hold it onto the back of the frame (sorry I didn’t picture that).
Helpful Tips and Variations:
-If you buy a frame with a stand already built into the back, you won’t need an easel. Unfortunately I thought of this after I bought the frame!
- My frame was 13 inches long and I only have 12×12 scrapbook paper, so I used a 1 inch strip that I cut off the side of the scrapbook paper and added it to the bottom, then I covered the seam with ribbon. The ribbon adds a little character and hides a blemish- I love it!
- If you are going to be cutting vinyl letters, cut them backwards so that the letters stick onto the inside of the glass. That way you can wipe your frame clean and not have to worry about your vinyl eventually coming up.
- If you don’t have vinyl, simply print the word “menu” right onto your scrapbook paper from your computer. – If you’d like to order the vinyl from me, I can make it and ship it for $3- just email me if you’re interested! (You can pick your font and color.)
This Wednesday, I will be showing a huge variety of menu boards for my workshop series on CrazyDomestic. If you don’t have a menu board already, or you want to change the one you have, you must check it out!

I love this cute and practical idea!

cute! but if you stick your vinyl to the back of the glass, won't it look weird? won't you be able to see the adhesive-ness of it?

I want one of these! Maybe put it on our list for our crafting projects?
Emily-
You dont see the adhesiveness, the backside of the vinyl looks the same as the front only it is shinier, but behind the glass dulls the shine anyway- it works really well!
Misty-
We can totally make these in addition to another project- it would literally take 2 minutes to make, so we couldn't make a whole day out of it. Unless we did multiples or something for Christmas gifts!
What a great idea! I have an old cookie sheet here and an idea in my head of how I want to make my menu board, it's just finding the time to do it
