If you are a woman, and/or you have hair, this post if for you {I think that pretty much covers all of you}! A few weeks ago I got this question from one of my Ask Anna readers and I wanted to share it with all of you.
“I am wondering if you have any ideas/suggestions/solutions for getting hair spray off walls, floors etc? I would love to know because it has marked my bathroom walls as my daughter thinks it should be sprayed everywhere!!!”
Even if you don’t have a daughter that has taken a fancy to spraying hairspray everywhere I think we can all relate to this problem. When spraying my hair it tends to get everywhere, doors, walls, floors, counter top, sink, curling iron, etc. So what’s the easiest solution?
SHAMPOO!
Think about it, we use shampoo in the shower to get the hairspray out of our hair so why not use it to get it off of everything else too?!
Here’s what you will need
Empty spray bottle
Shampoo
Water
Sponge (the Scotch-Brite green & yellow ones are my favorite)
Here’s what to do
1. Fill the spray bottle with a mixture of 1/3 shampoo to 2/3 water. Swirl to mix {if you shake it will get too bubbly}.
2. Spray the shampoo mixture on the walls, doors, floors, counter top, curling irons, etc.
3. Let it set for at least a minute or two.
4. Using a sponge scrub the shampoo mixture off. Be careful when scrubbing the walls, don’t use too much pressure because you don’t want to take the paint off the walls!
5. Using a clean cloth dry the walls.
6. After drying the walls, door, etc. run your hand along them, this is what I call the “touch test”. If they still feel a little sticky then repeat the process, they’re might be layers and layers of hair spray that need to be removed. If the walls, doors, etc. feel smooth then you are finished!
Note: I want to mention this because I don’t want you to lose the paint on your walls. DO NOT use a Magic Eraser. Magic Erasers are great, but not for this task. You would have to scrub too hard to get the hairspray off the walls and it will end up taking paint off your walls, I learned this the hard way trying to get it off my baseboards. :/
Happy scrubbing!

Well that makes so much sense. Thanks for the tip! To minimize this problem, I usually step into the shower before I start spraying.
That’s a great idea! I’m too lazy to go outside but I think I could definitely handle stepping into the shower.

OR, just use a Norwex Enviro cloth and water!
I love the Idea but I think for mirrors just water and sponge works super well for taking hair spray off.
All I can think is, “Well, of course!” It makes perfect sense!!! We’ll be moving sometime in the next 6 months, so I’m definitely going to try this out. Thanks!
Awesome! I’m glad the timing was so perfect for you!

Duh! Man…why didn’t somebody think of this before??? You, my dear, are a genius…thank you!!! And my walls thank you, too…;)

Hi. Just as a tip….if you have white walls or doors, the green scotch bright scrubbers may stain them green…especially if you scrub a little too hard. oops!
I switched over to a scratch free scrubber that I use on windows. It’s white and did the job. Great post btw, I’ve always wondered how to get that off my walls!
Thanks Julie!
Anna
Totally Brilliant!! I’ve always wondered how to get hairspray off of everything in the bathroom, thanks for posting!!
You’re welcome!!
Anna
I wonder if this works with removing spray starch off floors and walls of your laundry room? If not, do you have any suggestions for that? Thanks!
I don’t use starch so I’ve never thought about it but I think the shampoo would be worth a try. If it doesn’t work email me and I will find a solution for you. My email is askannamoseley@hotmail.com.

Fabulous! Thank you so much for this. With me and my 3 girls in the house we are constantly battling this. I am going to have to share this w/my readers soon since we’re all about hair & anything related to it!
Awesome, thank you!

Baking soda and water will do the same thing. If you have a lot of hairspray build up in your hair you can rinse it with a mixture of baking soda and water
That is good to know, thank you! I always love learning new tricks.

Clarifying shampoo might work better than plain shampoo. Only because it’s made to strip hairspray off of the hair. This is a great idea and I’m happy I found it. Never would have thought about this.
Awesome, thanks for the tip Crystal!

This is genius! As a major hairspray addict, I’m constantly, and unsuccessfully, trying to scrub it off of everything in my bathroom. I can’t wait to try this tomorrow. Tomorrow is Saturday and my day off, and I couldn’t be more excited to clean. Haha!
That’s awesome. I’m happy that I could actually get someone excited about cleaning.

Hi, Anna
Do you know
1) an effective way to clean plastic and painted metal blindes?
2) cleaning floor tile and especially the dirty grout? I tried every cleaning product from the stores, no luck.
Thank you.
I would appreciate the response!
I use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle on the sink and counter and wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth. It takes hair spray off in a flash and leaves everything sparkly. I have not used it on the walls, however. Shampoo sounds like a great idea!
That’s a great idea. I’m just discovering how great rubbing alcohol is for cleaning. I’m sure I’ll have some posts on it in the future.

What a great idea. I am going to give it a try. I have been looking for something to get the hair spray off my bathroom door for quite some time. Thanks for the tip.
Good way to use up the little bottles of Hotel Shampoo
Windex is also great for this problem. Works like a charm.
I am trying to get away from using ANYTHING store bought. Whether its shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, even food. Is there an all natural solution? Im not too big on all the chemicals. Thank you!
i clean houses for a living and the best way to remove hairspray is windex, only takes a few seconds to work, then wipe it off with a dry rag no rinsing no scubbing .dont be afraid to spray a lot, sometimes heavier build up requires more windex, and for those wanting to get away from chemicals use hot as you can stand it water,it works pretty good too.
It’s unbelievable idea to get rid of hairspray on the walls…thanks for sharing!
