Hotel Toiletries Service Idea

Hi everyone! I’m Kelly from according to kelly. If we haven’t met already, I’m a Cherry Coke drinking abstaining, crushed ice loving, world-traveling, bike riding, apron wearing, snowboarding, fabric obsessed, marathon training, sparkle skirt wearing, surprisingly shy triathlete, REAL Orange County housewife & mama of 3, with ADD crafting tendencies & an MBA degree.

Summer is the perfect time for one of my all-time favorite service projects: collecting hotel toiletries.

according to kellyWhile you’re out & about this summer, traveling the world, bring along an extra ziplock bag (or two) & stock up on unused hotel toiletries. No, no silly… there not for you! You’re going to donate them to your local Ronald McDonald House, homeless charity, or battered women’s home.

It’s quick, it’s easy, your kids can help & donated hotel toiletries can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Want to take your service project one step further? Start a movement & take up a collection… ask your friends, family & neighbors to participate too!

Simply ask them to gather unused hotel toiletries during their summer vacations (& business trips) as well. Or, make it even easier for them… ziplock bags with a due date and a “hotel toiletries wanted” printable attached. (Download your printable HERE.)

Hope you & the kiddos have fun with our favorite service project. This is definitely one that everyone can participate in!

xoxo, K

  1. yep, great idea ~ i do this too! first, i keep a basket of these trial sizes in the guest room in case any of my guests forget an item. then, the rest i typically donate. you can also get a lot of these trial sizes by requesting free samples from companies. if you coupon, you can sometimes get FREE full size items too! it’s great to give back :)

  2. Hmmm, not to be a spoil sport the the use of hotel toiletries is for guests staying at the hotel. I’m not sure we should be teaching children to take these for charitable gift giving. While I’m sure Ronald McDonald Houses appreicate donations of travel-sized toiletries, I don’t see anywhere on their website where they are asking people to take these from hotels to give them to the houses.

I think it would be more appropriate to teach children to do penny drives or something similiar to raise money to buy these items from retail stores. Or to contact manufacturers or hotel chains about donating these items to such a wonderful cause.

    • You’d be surprised at how many local charities & shelters do request that these items be donated. Even the Ronald McDonald Houses feature it as one of their “30 Ways to Volunteer:”

I definitely agree that raising money to buy these items would be another fabulous way to be involved. But personally, I see no problem in donating any unused hotel toiletries for charitable purposes.

    • I don’t think kelly is advocating sneaking into hotels and taking their toiletries. I wouldn’t advocate taking towels or robes to donate, but when you pay for your room, the toiletries are included. Most people bring them home and already have a stash somewhere in the house to use….sometime, especially people who travel a lot for business. No better way to use them then by donating to people who really need them.

  3. Great idea! Many times I don’t take some of the toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner and lotion, but after our church asked for those items for a missions trip to Haiti, I’m going to take home everything they give me so I can donate them!

  4. what a terrific idea! I’d love to share this project and mission with my readers on It’s Toile Good. Would that be ok?

  5. Thanks Steph for sharing my idea!

  6. We do this whenever we travel and always donate to the women’s shelter, but ronald mcdonald house would be a great option too. not quite sure why i hadn’t thought of there!

  7. Kelly – what a fantastic idea! I love that you also included the printable sticker to help inspire friends and family to participate. We’re heading out on vacation soon, and will definitely be doing this. Thanks!

  8. i travel alot for work and i always take the hotel toiletries home with me – i donate them to local homeless shelters like the rescue mission and half way houses. They are always very appreciative.

post. I like to write a little comment to
    support you.

  10. What a GREAT idea!!! I always tip the help at the hotels for extra towels and good service. They ALWAYS leave tons of soap and shampoos!! I never want to hurt their feelings so I take the travel items!!! NOW I know what to do with them! THANKS!
