Hello there! I’m Jessica Downey and I am so excited to be here on Somewhat Simple! Stephanie is such a great blogger and I’m honored to be working with her. I’m looking forward to all the fun we’ll be having here together as you learn how to improve your photography and make the most of your camera.
Let me introduce myself – I’m the wife of a wonderful and supportive husband, and the mother of two precious little ones. My son is a gentle, loving five-year-old with Autism, and my daughter is a vivacious and sparkly two-year-old. When I’m not hugging, playing, teaching, driving, feeding, or cleaning up after them, you can always find me on a photo shoot or at my computer editing photos! I’ve been a photographer for about 5 years now. I actually went to school to become a teacher, not a photographer. I didn’t get into photography until after college. I’ve taken a few classes and workshops here and there, but experience has been my greatest teacher!
Photography is so much more than a job for me. It’s all about life. I’d like to share something from my wonderful associate Becky Higgins. Her motto is:
Photography helps me to do just that. Working on my craft, constantly learning, improving and finding my inner creativity are aspects of photography that enrich my life and give me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It’s something I love so much and is truly part of my “good life”. And then being able to use that to beautifully record special family occasions as well as recording all the day-to-day wonderfulness… it’s just so amazing and fulfilling to me! And it is my hope that I’ll be able to help you feel that as well!
So please join me every month here on Somewhat Simple as I share my passion for photography with you! Is there something in particular that you’d like to know about photography? Leave your questions and post suggestions in the comments!

I am so excited about this! I can’t wait for more of your posts on photography. I am definitely no professional but so enjoy capturing memories. I am currently looking for a SLR, so I will definitely need any and all help, encouragement, direction and wisdom I can get. Looking forward to the next one:)
I am a huge fan of your beautiful and unique work!! I can’t wait to learn more about how to do more with my own camera
I am new to photography. I’d like to know how to improve indoor photos with poor lighting without using the flash. My photos turn out very yellow and grainy when the light is too low. I have a Canon Rebel and have heard the 50mm / 1.4f is the best for indoors & at night, but a Canon Rebel is a crop frame camera so the 50 mm would be more like an 80 mm. I have the lens kit that came with the camera (18-55mm/3.5-5.6). I’m very confused if I just need to amp up the ISO or buy a lens with a really wide aperature. Thanks for your advice!
Heather, you are exactly right. Increasing your ISO and using a very wide aperture will both help you to get great indoor pictures! And it helps to get as much natural light coming in the windows as possible. I use my Canon 85mm 1.2 L lens indoors all the time and it works beautifully! You just have to stand a little farther from your subject, and you also won’t be able to capture a full room view. If you have any more questions, please feel free to email me at jessica@sierrastudiosphotography.com
Thanks for the advice. You gave me the “permission” I needed to find a great lens. I think the lenses that they include in the kits are OK, but I’ve heard the prime lenses are much better. I’ll just have to get used to changing out lenses for each setting, then it will just take me time to practice, practice, practice. Looking forward to more posts!
