Simple Ideas to Decorate for Fall

Hello Somewhat Simple readers! It me, Jen, form Scissors & Spatulas. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year and I love decorating my house for fall. It’s easy, colorful and can be done very inexpensively. Another great thing about fall decor is that it lasts for months! You can typically use fall decor from September to the end of November.  So even if you haven’t put out any decorations in your home, you can do it now and still have plenty of time to show it off! Today I’m going to share with you a few tips and tricks for decorating your home this fall.

A few “fallish” decorations for the coffee table in my family room.
The most practical items to use in fall decorating are pumpkins and gourds. Not only are they inexpensive, but you can eat them when you are finished with them! Take a trip to your local farmers market or pumpkin patch or just go to the produce isle of the grocery store. There are many different colors, shapes and sizes of pumpkins to choose from. Display these fruits (Yes, they are fruits, not veggies!) around your home in groups to make a big statement, or individually to accent other fall decor.
This little guy actually grew in our garden! Here, on my dining buffet, I’ve placed this itty bitty pumpkin under a glass dome to accent my pumpkin tower arrangement.

This gourd I purchased from the grocery store for about a dollar. I tied a ribbon around it’s stem and accented it with my Dollar Tree crow.

Create a centerpiece for your dining and kitchen tables with different sized fruits bunched in groups. Add different heights to the centerpiece with cake stands, candle holders and boxes. Use other accents such as votives, candelabras, dishes, greenery and flowers.
Buy your carving pumpkins early and display them on your doorstep to welcome guests.
You can also find fall foliage picks and plastic and fabric pumpkins for under $5 at almost any store that sells home decor.
On my coffee table I used two picks of leaves, berries and pumpkins to help create a fall focal point for my family room. The picks (from Michaels for a buck each) surround a plastic Dollar Tree pumpkin enclosed in a glass cloche. I added a fall-colored candle to my lantern and to balance out the display I place this darling retro fabric pumpkin from Kirklands on the side.
A very simple way to decorate for each holiday or season is apothecary jars. The possibilities for fill these glass jars is endless! I filled my fall apothecary jars with candy corn (Off limits until my Christmas decor comes out!) and a mixture of potpourri and mini pumpkins and gourds. I surrounded them with inexpensive picks from Michaels. I also took a Dollar Tree mini pumpkin, added some berries and leaves and hung it from a ribbon on an empty frame {I attached the ribbon to the back of the pumpkin with a glue gun}.
Another idea for an artificial pumpkin is to monogram it. You can use vinyl, fabric, paint or permanent marker to display your initial.
There are many more things you can do with artificial pumpkins. Embellish them with rhinestones. Accent them with fabric or ribbon. The possibilities are endless.

BUT, you don’t have to be “crafty” to have cute holiday decor. Stores like Kirklands, TJ Maxx and Marshalls (Homegoods), and Hobby Lobby have very cute, very reasonably priced seasonal decor. Here are a few examples of items I’ve gotten from these stores.
See, fall decorating isn’t difficult and it certainly doesn’t have to cost a lot! For more tips on easy and inexpensive decorating tips, stop by my blog, Scissors & Spatulas.  Happy fall y’all!
