When I was told the Lowe’s challenge for the month was a “bird retreat”, I was stumped.
I LOVE birds, but efforts have been made (again and again) to rid the pigeons who have made their nest in my dryer vent, and I know my husband would veto any plans to start feeding them!
Several birdhouse ideas popped into my head, but the idea that made it all the way to Lowe’s with me, was one with a small-feeder opening so that the bigger birds wouldn’t feel so welcome! (I hate to even type that ’cause I do love birds, I just hate the mess they leave on my roof and my driveway, so I’d prefer to enjoy them from a distance!)
Here is what I came up with:
And here is how I made them:
- Finished birdhouses (unless you feel totally inspired to make your own!) I got these at WalMart for $3 -$4
- Saw
- Glue- I used Gorilla Glue ’cause it is what I had, but I would suggest using wood glue unless you are a master at the Gorilla stuff. My sticky hands for 2 days clearly stated that I am no such expert.
- Stair railing. I used 2 poles to make 3 houses
- Stair molding (not sure if that is the right name of it!) but you’ll need 2 pieces of molding per house. I used 2 different types of molding.
- Paint and paint brush
1. Cut your stair rail to 3 different sizes.
2. Paint your birdhouses
3. Glue your rail to one piece of molding and let it dry.
4. Glue your birdhouse to the other piece of molding, then glue that to the top of the stair rail.
5. Distress the birdhouse by gently sanding off some of the paint.
When your glue is completely dry, you’re done!

Your bird houses are adorable. My children have painted the little bird houses from Joann’s before, but maybe mommy needs to make some up and put them on a pedestal because I’m PRETTY sure these would look adorable on my front porch. Thanks for the great idea!
Going to Pin them now.
Those turned out so cute! I would prefer to invite the smaller birds as well! Their poop is a LOT less messy
