Beach vacations in the fall are the perfect way to have some fun with less crowds and less cost!
Who said summer has to end after Labor Day?!? There are still plenty of warm days left, so why not plan a beach vacation? With all the kids back in school, the crowds thin out and the rates go down. Here are some of our favorite ways to experience the beach in the fall.
Beach Vacations During the Fall
Go for a Swim & Search for Shells
There are a lot of misconceptions about visiting the beach in the fall. One of the biggest is that you can’t swim. That is not true. The weather may have gotten a tad cooler but the water is still warm. So put on the bathing suit and jump in! It is also a great time to search for shells while the waves lap at your feet. With the crowds being less the shells haven’t been disturbed. You will most likely find some real beauties. Also, be on the lookout for beautiful sea glass but be careful you don’t cut your feet!
Splurge for Less
One of the best reasons to visit the beach during the fall is that hotels will have lower rates. That means you can stay at an ultra-swanky hotel right on the beach for a fraction of the summer rates. It is amazing to be able to walk out of your hotel and be right on the beach – you definitely need to experience that! Often times hotels will offer additional packages to entice fall travelers. You could get free breakfast, free wifi, or discounted multi-night rates. So make sure you shop around to get the best price and package for your family.
There are always fun things to do in beach cities that are not all about the beach. One of my favorites is to take a bike ride through the town and really see things up close and personal. Check out local area museums – they can be really cheap or even free. Find some mini-golf, an arcade, or even a bowling alley. There will be plenty of ways to pass your day away that doesn’t include sand and water.
You can also check out the calendar of events of the city or town you are visiting. You might find fall festivals for a night under the stars, movies at the beach, or music events. Beach towns have to keep the revenue rolling so there are typically several events planned just for fall visitors. If you are going later in the fall, look for an Oktoberfest in the area. Who doesn’t love good food and fun music?!
If you have a fisherman in your group, look for some fishing charters. Often times they are way cheaper in the fall than they are in the summer and you can catch some great fish because the water is a little cooler. Make sure to bring back your catch so you can grill it up in one of the area parks that have grills and picnic tables.
Eat. A lot.
All of these activities will have you work up quite the appetite. Research the area’s restaurants and pick some of the best. Sometimes when the summer season is over, the menu prices drop a little. (This is not true for chain restaurants, so make sure you wander off the beaten path and eat where the locals do.) Don’t forget to check out the beach staples like funnel cake, saltwater taffy, boardwalk fries, and of course corn dogs!
As you can see there are several things you can do during the fall that would make an amazing vacation at the beach. It is perfect for families that are on a tight budget or if you just want to relax in peace. The best thing you can do is pick where you want to go and then research their fall activities. Don’t forget the sunscreen though! The weather may be cooler but the sun will still be shining bright!
