I make homemade cinnamon rolls 2 or 3 times a year and the all-day process can be exhausting! But I tried this cinnamon roll hack for Christmas a couple years ago and it totally lived up to all the hype!
I made just a few modifications and added my favorite Copycat Cinnabon Cream Cheese Frosting. I have to say, this “recipe” is even better than the version I’ve been making for 15 years – I’ll never make them any other way!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Super simple: No need to mess with yeast or waiting for dough to rise. We use store-bought cinnamon rolls, so it’s quick and easy.
- Rich and gooey: The addition of heavy cream, melted butter, and brown sugar makes these cinnamon rolls extra decadent.
- Extra frosting: You can stop with the included icing or add homemade cream cheese frosting for even more indulgence.
Ingredients You’ll Need
For the dough:
- 3 cans (5 rolls each) of Pillsbury Grands Cinnabon Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting
For the filling:
- 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream – divided
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
For the frosting:
- 1/2 8-ounce package of cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
How to Make Easy Cinnamon Rolls in 30 Minutes
Step 1: Prepare Your Pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Drizzle 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream into the bottom of a 9×13 glass baking dish.
Step 2: Arrange the Cinnamon Rolls
Lay the cinnamon rolls in the pan so they’re touching but not too crowded.
Step 3: Add the Filling
In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, and vanilla until combined. Scoop a heaping spoonful of this mixture onto the top of each roll and spread it evenly with the back of your spoon.
Step 4: Pour Over the Cream
Pour the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream over the top, making sure to cover the entire pan. This will make your cinnamon rolls incredibly soft and gooey.
Step 5: Bake
Place the pan in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and fully cooked. If the tops start browning too quickly, cover the pan with foil for the remaining baking time (around the 25-minute mark).
Step 6: Prepare the Frosting
While the rolls are baking, whip up your cream cheese frosting by mixing all the frosting ingredients together with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy.
Step 7: Frost and Serve
Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, melt the included icing and drizzle it over the top. If you’re feeling extra indulgent, slather on the homemade cream cheese frosting. Serve warm and enjoy!
Tips for Perfect Cinnamon Rolls
- Keep them gooey: The heavy cream added on top of the rolls makes them incredibly soft and moist. Don’t skip this step!
- Cover with foil: If the tops are browning faster than the centers are baking, cover the dish with foil to prevent burning while allowing the insides to cook fully.
- Extra frosting: You can use both the included icing and the cream cheese frosting for a double layer of sweetness.

For the filling:
- 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream, divided
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
For the frosting:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened (1/2 of a standard brick)
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° f.
- Drizzle 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream on the bottom of a glass 9×13 baking dish.
- Lay cinnamon rolls in the pan so they touch.
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the brown sugar and vanilla. Scoop a heaping spoonful of the sugar mixture onto the tops of each roll, spreading the mixture with the back of your spoon to cover.
- Pour the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream over the top, spreading to cover the entire pan.
- Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked thoroughly. If the tops of your rolls begin to brown too fast, cover the pan with foil for the remaining baking time. (I usually cover with foil around the 25-minute mark.)
- Meanwhile, make your frosting by mixing all the ingredients with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
- Melt the icing that comes with the cinnamon rolls and drizzle over the top. You can stop here if you just like iced cinnamon rolls, or you can make them taste even more amazing by topping them with cream cheese frosting.
- Serve warm and ENJOY!!
