French toast rollups add a little extra indulgence to the classic French toast recipe, and I make no apologies as to how many times your family will ask you to make them. So, get ready!
The kids love waking up to these on weekend mornings, but because they’re so easy, you can make them on busy mornings too! Not to mention having them prepared as an afternoon snack for when the kids walk in the door is always a nice surprise.
It doesn’t get much better than a rollup or two with a side of honey lime berry salad or healthy smoothie to start the day!
If you’re feeling fancy, serve them with a fork, otherwise have plenty of napkins ready because, like apple French toast bites, most people like to pick them up and dip them in maple syrup!

Ingredients for French Toast RollUps
- For the egg mixture: You’ll need eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- White bread: Use soft bread like white sandwich bread so that it flattens and rolls easily. Anything too thick or dense won’t work.
- Cream cheese: Bring it out to room temperature about 40 minutes prior. Softened cream cheese is much easier to spread.
- Strawberries: Fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and chopped.
- For serving: Powdered sugar and maple syrup.
How to Make French Toast RollUps
- Prepare bread for filling. Cut the crusts off all sides and use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread.
- Fill the rolls. Spread cream cheese along the bottom of a slice of bread and top it with chopped strawberries. Roll it up tightly, starting with the edge with the filling. Do this with the remaining bread and filling and set them aside.
- Dip in egg mixture. One at a time, dip each roll into the egg mixture, making sure to coat all sides.
- Cook until golden. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Work in batches, and place the rolls seam side down. Cook them until the outside of the roll is evenly golden.
Enjoy with a dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Substitutions and Variations
- Swap the strawberries for blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries.
- Skip the fruit altogether and use strawberry cream cheese instead.
- You can also fill it with your favorite jam, nut butter, or Nutella.
- Peanut butter and banana is always a classic choice.
- Instead of powdered sugar, sprinkle a cinnamon sugar mixture on the outside.
Recipe Tips
- Have a variety of dips on hand so people can pick and choose what they want! Maple syrup, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, whipped cream, you name it!
- In a classic French toast recipe, you want stale bread that can soak up the egg mixture. This isn’t the case for French toast rollups. Make sure the bread is nice and soft.
- Use a shallow bowl to whip up the egg batter so it’s easy to dip and roll.
- These are best eaten right away. The longer they sit, the soggier they get.
