Paintbrush Sugar Cookies
Sugar cookies are one of my favorite cookies to make, mostly because they are just so fun to decorate. (Ok, they also taste fantastic too!)
This paintbrush decorating technique is like an art project + snack time rolled into one! Painting sugar cookies is an easier way to decorate than using frosting or royal icing, and it doesn’t require any weird ingredients or trips to the store!
Here’s how to do it –
How to Paint Sugar Cookies
INGREDIENTS + SUPPLIES –
- sugar cookie dough – storebought or homemade sugar cookie dough both work fine for this method.
- eggs
- food coloring/ food gel colors
- water
- small cups
- cookie cutters
- paintbrushes
DIRECTIONS –
PREP. Preheat oven according to recipe directions. Roll out your dough with a rolling pin onto a floured surface and cut your dough with your cookie cutters. Place your cut-out dough on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
MIX. Make your cookie paint by mix 1 egg yolk in a cup or small bowl with drops of food coloring until you get your desired color. Add 1/4 tsp of water to lighten the colors, if needed. Try to keep it as close to a broken egg consistency as you can – too much water won’t yield very vibrant cookies. Repeat for all the colors you need.
PAINT. Dip your paint brushes into the egg mixture and paint your cookies as creatively as you’d like.
BAKE. Once your cookie dough is painted and looking so pretty, pop them in the oven and bake according to the recipe directions.
COOL. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
SERVE. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or in an airtight container for up to one week.
Painting sugar cookies is simple, fun, and delicious!
