Pizza Cupcakes are a delicious option for your homemade pizza night. They’re easy to customize and can be on the table in 30 minutes or less!
Pizza Cupcakes: An Easy Dinner Idea
These pizza cupcakes are one of the most genius recipes ever! They’re simple to make, super delicious, and portable, just like a cupcake. What could be better than that?!
Pepperoni Pizza Pockets, Tortilla Pizza, and Upside Down Deep Dish Pizza are a few more ways we like to put a twist on a classic pizza pie, but these cupcakes have been the most requested lately.
The kids love them in their lunch boxes and as after-school snacks, but they also make great party appetizers.
You get all of the yummy elements of a pizza, like fluffy dough, saucy, gooey cheese, and pepperoni, but they’re rolls baked in a muffin tin for an extra bit of fun!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- I love that it takes only 20 minutes from start to finish, and it is a meal the kids all LOVE to help create!
- You can use whatever ingredients you want as toppings, and you can change the flavor each time you bake them.
- They’re always a hit with pizza lovers, no matter the crowd. Kids, adults, fancy, casual, you name it.
Ingredients
- Pizza dough: You can use store-bought refrigerated pizza dough or make homemade pizza dough.
- Sauce: Use a jar of your favorite pizza sauce. You can always use homemade tomato sauce if you’ve got some on hand.
- Mini pepperoni: These are the perfect size for little pizza cupcakes. Smaller pepperoni slices just mean you can use more, right?!
- Mozzarella cheese: I wouldn’t split hairs here. Yes, grating fresh mozzarella is always best, but in this case, we’re all about convenience. Go ahead and use a package of pre-shredded cheese if you desire.
- For garnish: Grated parmesan cheese and dried basil add a ton of extra flavor once the cupcake pizza rolls are out of the oven.
Variations
- Use white or orange cheddar or ricotta instead of the mozzarella.
- Crescent rolls also work as pizza dough.
- Swap the pizza sauce for marinara sauce, Alfredo sauce, BBQ sauce, or pesto sauce.
- Add red pepper flakes for heat.
- Different topping ideas could include, Canadian bacon, ham, onions, green or black olives, green peppers, pineapple, regular bacon, mushrooms, sausage, etc. Whatever your favorite pizza toppings are on a traditional pizza, you can try them in your pizza cupcake recipe.
- Other variations that we’ve tried and loved are Hawaiian-style pizzas with Canadian bacon and pineapple, and BBQ Chicken pizzas with BBQ sauce, shredded chicken, red onions, and bacon—that one is my favorite!
How to Make Pizza Cupcakes
Step 1: Roll out the pizza dough on a flat surface, then spread the sauce over the dough, leaving a 1-inch space along one long edge of the dough.
Step 2: Sprinkle the cheese evenly across the top and top with the pepperoni. Again, make sure the pepperoni is evenly distributed so each cupcake has some.
Step 3: Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into one-inch strips lengthwise.
Step 4: Roll the strips of dough into rolls, over the toppings, ending at the edge without pizza sauce. Place one roll in each prepared muffin cup, swirled side facing up.
Step 5: Bake according to your pizza dough’s directions in a preheated oven until golden brown. (Mine were finished in 10 minutes.)
Step 6: Pull them out of the oven when the dough is cooked through, then sprinkle them with Parmesan cheese, basil, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, or any garnish you’d like.
Enjoy!
Storing, Freezing, and Reheating
Fridge. These pizza cupcakes are great as leftovers! Store them in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Freeze. Once they have cooled, place them on a baking sheet and flash freeze them until they are solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer bag once. That way, they won’t freeze stuck together, and you can take out only what you need.
Reheat. Warm them up in the microwave, toaster oven, or air fryer.
FAQs
This makes 24, so you’ll need 2 muffin tins.
You can cut the strips with a very sharp knife. Use a large knife so you’re not making too many little cuts along the way.
You’ll need some tasty side dishes if you’re serving these as a main course. Along with 1-2 cupcakes per person, you could also whip up an easy salad or grilled veggies.
If you’re having them as a snack, they’re even better with a dipping sauce! Serve them with a side of marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or garlic sauce.
