What is a Reuben Sandwich?
A classic Reuben is made with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Thousand Island or Russian dressing sandwiched between 2 slices of rye bread. You can eat the sandwich hot or cold, but we love it most hot off the grill! (Nothing like toasted bread with meat and melting cheese, right?)
What Ingredients Go On A Reuben Sandwich?
- CORNED BEEF – You can buy Corned Beef from the deli department, or use your leftover homemade corned beef.
- SAUERKRAUT – I prefer mine drained, but some people like the extra tangy flavor!
- DRESSING- Get a high-quality Thousand Island or Russian Dressing. Don’t settle for mediocre on this!
- CHEESE- Swiss cheese is the most common cheese on a Reuben, but if Swiss isn’t your favorite, provolone or American taste great too!
How to Make a Reuben Sandwich
- Preheat a large skillet or griddle on medium heat.
- Separately heat up the corned beef and sauerkraut in the microwave until warm.
- Butter one side of each bread slice, then spread Thousand Island dressing on the non-buttered sides.
- On two slices of bread, layer one slice of Swiss cheese, 2-3 slices of corned beef. Add 1/8 cup sauerkraut, then top with one more slice of cheese. Cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered sides out.
- Place the sandwiches on an indoor grill until both sides are golden brown and serve hot.
